If I judged it solely as "Jem" I would not say it deserves more than one star if any at all.

Negative: This movie deserved to flop because it just isn't "Jem". There is not enough glamour and glitter, fashion and fame to make up for this lack.

There were no Misfits, which meant that the only foil for Jem and crew was Erica, whose reign was easily toppled (in one instant) by her son Rio. This (ah-hem) reflects badly on any attempt for romance, and it drags their relationship into the modern lust-after them and leave-them format. But, in the movie, apparently, Jerrica begins to lust after Rio after seeing him pull on his pants and zip them up. In the cartoon, there was never a doubt that Rio cared about Jerrica and that they had a real relationship. However, the cartoon also depicted Rio as knowing Jerrica since they were kids. That premise was carried too far in the cartoon. There is one notable improvement on the cartoon: Jerrica does not deceive Rio about who she is. The Jem earrings do not even project holograms, but end up (spoiler alert) being a component of the robot, triggering video saved by Jerrica's father. There is no holographic magic, just a scavenger hunt directed by a "Synergy" robot, sort of cute, but hardly magical. They are going to lose their house, so Jerrica, Kimber, Aja, and Shana try to help their aunt, and, while pursuing music offers, end up becoming victims of Erica Raymond, whose son, Rio, falls for Jerrica. Her father has been dead for 10 years and she lives with her aunt. The movie's premise is that Jerrica Benton posts a video on YouTube that goes viral immediately. The music is acceptable, if you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be worthy of Jem (it's not), but there's a deplorable lack thereof.

While the cartoon TV series was truly outrageous and amazing, the movie merely gives a few nods to the original, making the characters quite different, and even changing them nearly entirely (as in the case of Erica Raymond, who replaced Eric). The format liberally uses reality-TV style shots, which I found annoying and distracting. This review is on the remake of Jem for the real-life movie (not the TV series).
